Meaning
This grammar pattern is used to report what someone said or to name something. It uses the plain form of verbs, adjectives, or nouns before と言います. Direct quotations use quotation marks 「」 and repeat the exact words, while indirect quotations paraphrase the speech using the plain form. When introducing yourself with a noun, use 名詞と言います without だ after the noun.
