てもいいですか: May I...? / Is it okay if I...?
Verb te-form + もいいですか → May I...? / Is it okay to...?
This pattern is used to ask for permission. If the answer is yes, you'll hear はい、いいですよ (Yes, that's fine).

Japanese speakers rarely say "no" directly. Instead, they often trail off with ちょっと…… (it's a bit...) to decline politely.
