たい — How to Say "I Want to Do" in Japanese

行きたい, 食べたい, 見たい — to say you want to do something, just add たい after the verb's ます-stem. It conjugates exactly like an い-adjective.

"I want to go to Japan." "I want to eat ramen." In Japanese, expressing "I want to do something" uses たい. It attaches to verbs and expresses the speaker's desire. At N5, mastering the basics is all you need.

How to Attach It: ます-Stem + たい

Verb ます-form → drop ます → add たい

Verbます-formたい-formMeaning
行く行きます行きたいwant to go
食べる食べます食べたいwant to eat
見る見ます見たいwant to see
買う買います買いたいwant to buy
飲む飲みます飲みたいwant to drink
するしますしたいwant to do

The pattern is straightforward: drop ます, add たい.

たい Conjugates Like an い-Adjective

Since たい ends in い, it follows the same conjugation pattern as い-adjectives:

FormConjugationExampleMeaning
Affirmative〜たい行きたいですwant to go
Negative〜たくない行きたくないですdon't want to go
Past affirmative〜たかった行きたかったですwanted to go
Past negative〜たくなかった行きたくなかったですdidn't want to go

Same as い-adjectives: い → くない → かった → くなかった.

Example Sentences

日本に行きたいです。 → I want to go to Japan. パンを食べたいです。 → I want to eat bread. テレビを見たいです。 → I want to watch TV. 今日は何もしたくないです。 → I don't want to do anything today. あの映画が見たかったです。 → I wanted to see that movie.

Particle Swap: を Can Become が

The object particle before たい can optionally become — both are correct:

水を飲みたいです。 → I want to drink water. 水が飲みたいです。 → I want to drink water.

Using adds a slightly stronger sense of desire. At N5, either is fine — don't overthink it.

Important: たい Is Mainly for First Person

たい expresses the speaker's own desire. You can use it in questions to ask others, but you shouldn't use it to describe a third person's wishes directly:

UsageExample
About yourself私は寿司が食べたいです。 → I want to eat sushi.
Asking someone何が食べたいですか。 → What do you want to eat?
About someone else田中さんは寿司が食べたいです。 (unnatural)

To talk about what someone else wants to do, you'd use たがっている — but that's N4 material. Don't worry about it yet.

Summary

  • Verb ます-stem + たい = "want to do..."
  • たい conjugates like an い-adjective: たい → たくない → たかった → たくなかった
  • The object particle を can optionally become が (が feels stronger)
  • たい is mainly for first person and questions
