〜こととて

A formal, old-fashioned way to state a reason — often used when offering an apology or excuse.

Meaning

「こととて」 also expresses a reason or cause, meaning "because..." or "since..." It is equivalent to 「〜のことなので、それだけ」. This is a formal, somewhat old-fashioned expression commonly found in set phrases used for apologies, such as 「知らぬこととて」 (because I didn't know), 「はじめてのこととて」 (since it was the first time), 「新人のこととて」 (since I'm new), and 「わからないこととて」 (because I didn't understand).
