Both だけ and まで deal with limits, but in different directions: だけ defines a scope (only this much), まで marks an endpoint (up to here). And まで has a bonus usage that's easy to overlook — expressing "even" with surprise.
だけ: Only / Just
だけ limits the scope with a neutral tone (unlike しか, which carries disappointment):
| Example | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 今まで一度だけ会社に遅刻したことがあります。 | I've been late to work only once. |
| 野菜だけ食べる。 | I only eat vegetables. |
だけ and the Position of Case Particles
だけ can go before or after a case particle (で, に, を, etc.), with subtle differences:
| Sentence | Meaning | Nuance |
|---|---|---|
| 山田さんは日本語だけで発表する。 | Yamada presents using only Japanese. | Limits the language itself |
| 山田さんは日本語でだけ発表する。 | Yamada presents only in Japanese. | Limits the method |
「だけ + で」limits the object, 「で + だけ」limits the method. In practice the difference is small, but exams test this.
だけ with Verbs
だけ can also follow verbs, meaning "only did this":
| Example | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 見ただけで買わなかった。 | I only looked and didn't buy. |
| できるだけ早く来てください。 | Please come as early as possible. |
できるだけ = as much as possible — a fixed expression.
まで: Endpoint
The most basic use of まで marks a time or space endpoint:
| Example | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 9時から5時まで働く。 | I work from 9 to 5. |
| 東京から大阪まで新幹線で行く。 | I go from Tokyo to Osaka by bullet train. |
まで + Verb: Until Something Happens
| Example | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 仕事が終わるまでずっとサボっていた。 | I slacked off until work ended. |
| 電車が来るまで待ちましょう。 | Let's wait until the train comes. |
Verb dictionary form + まで = keep doing something until...
まで: Even (Surprise / Accumulation)
まで can also express unexpected addition — "even this on top of everything else":
| Example | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 車まで故障してしまった。 | Even the car broke down. |
| 友達まで裏切った。 | Even my friends betrayed me. |
| 彼は仕事だけでなく、家事まで手伝ってくれる。 | He helps not just with work but even with housework. |
This usage of まで is similar to さえ (even). The difference: まで leans toward "accumulation / unexpected addition," while さえ leans toward "extreme example."
だけ vs まで Comparison
| だけ | まで | |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Scope limitation (only) | Endpoint / accumulation |
| Tone | Neutral | Endpoint: neutral; Addition: surprise |
| Requires negative | No | No |
| Example | 一度だけ | 車まで故障した |

Q1. What's the difference between 「日本語だけで発表する」 and 「日本語でだけ発表する」?
Show answer
- 日本語だけで — limits the language object (only the Japanese language)
- 日本語でだけ — limits the method (only by means of Japanese)
The actual meaning is very similar, but the first emphasizes "only Japanese" while the second emphasizes "only in Japanese (as a method)."
Q2. In 「車まで故障してしまった」, does まで indicate an endpoint or accumulation?
Show answer
Accumulation. Here まで means "even the car broke down" — one more misfortune on top of others. The tone is surprise and frustration.
Q3. Translate "I'll wait until he comes" into Japanese.
Show answer
彼が来るまで待つ。 Verb dictionary form (来る) + まで = until something happens.
