〜 後で…

Japanese grammar for expressing sequential actions: what happens after something is completed

Meaning

This pattern describes the order of two actions or events. Use the past tense form (た-form) of a verb before 後で, or attach の to a noun before 後で. The tense of the entire sentence is determined by the verb in the second clause. The verb before 後で must always be in た-form to indicate completion of the first action.

Formation

Part of speechFormation
動詞動詞(た形) 後で
名词名詞の 後で

Examples

  1. 空港で チェックインした 後で、買い物を します。
After checking in at the airport, I will go shopping.

  2. 仕事が 終わった 後で、友達と お酒を 飲みに 行きました。
After work finished, we went to have drinks with friends.

  3. 授業の 後で 休みます。
    After class, I rest.

Summary

  • Always use た-form (past tense) before 後で to show the first action is completed
  • For nouns, add の before 後で (e.g., 授業の後で = after class)
  • The sentence tense is determined by the second verb, not by 後で itself
