Thinking & Judging — Kanji for Mental Actions

思, 考, 知, 覚, 決, 選, 判, 解 — from intuition to logic, from judgment to evaluation, 20 kanji for thinking and decision-making.

Our brains make countless judgments every day: having a thought (思う), thinking carefully (考える), making a decision (決める), choosing (選ぶ). These "invisible actions" have precise kanji counterparts in Japanese.

This article teaches you 20 kanji for thinking and judgment — from feelings to logic, from analysis to conclusions.

思う vs 考える

Japanese has two key verbs for "think," and they work very differently:

Comparison思う (おもう)考える (かんがえる)
TypeIntuition / feelingLogic / analysis
Example美味しいと思う (I think it's tasty)原因を考える (think about the cause)
Englishfeel / think (opinion)think (analyze) / consider
Patternと思う (I think that)について考える (think about)

"あの映画は面白いと思う" = I think that movie is interesting (subjective feeling)

"なぜ面白いか考える" = Think about why it's interesting (logical analysis)

The Two Faces of 覚える

The kanji 覚 has two completely different kun'yomi readings and meanings:

ReadingVerbMeaningExample
おぼ覚える (おぼえる)memorize漢字を覚える (memorize kanji)
覚ます (さます)wake (someone) up目を覚ます (wake up)
覚める (さめる)wake up夢から覚める (wake from a dream)

What do memory and waking up have in common? Both involve "consciousness becoming clear."

空気を読む — Japanese Decision-Making Culture

Japanese thinking and judgment are closely tied to 場の空気 (the atmosphere of a situation):

  • 根回し (ねまわし): Behind-the-scenes consensus-building before formal meetings. Before using 決める (decide), Japanese people spend extensive time with 考える (think) and 調べる (investigate).
  • 空気を読む (くうきをよむ): "Read the air." When Japanese people make judgments (判断する), they consider not just logic but the surrounding atmosphere.
  • Confirmation culture: 確認 is one of the most frequently used words in Japanese workplaces — every decision requires repeated confirmation.

This is why Japanese has such a rich vocabulary for thinking and judgment — the culture values the process over the result.

Practice

Q1. What's the difference between 思う and 考える?

Show answer

Intuition vs. logic. 思う = intuitive thoughts or feelings (I think/feel that~); 考える = logical, analytical thinking (think about the cause).

Q2. 覚える and 覚ます use the same kanji. Why do they mean different things?

Show answer

Different kun'yomi readings. 覚える (おぼえる) = memorize; 覚ます (さます) = wake up. The connection: both mean "consciousness becoming clear" — memorizing is clarity of knowledge, waking is clarity of the body.

Q3. 計る and 測る are both read はかる. What's the difference?

Show answer

Calculate vs. measure. 計る leans toward calculating time or quantities (時間を計る = time something), while 測る leans toward measuring physical quantities (温度を測る = measure temperature).

Q4. What is 根回し? Which thinking kanji does it involve?

Show answer

Behind-the-scenes consensus-building. 根回し = privately coordinating with stakeholders before a formal decision. It involves: 考える (think), 調べる (investigate), 決める (decide) — think first, research, then decide.

Q5. Why is 確認 so important in Japanese workplaces?

Show answer

Confirmation culture. Japanese workplaces emphasize process and accuracy, requiring repeated confirmation (確かめる) before decisions. "確認お願いします" (please confirm) is one of the most-heard phrases at work. 確 = certain, 認 = recognize.

Summary

  • 思う = intuitive thinking, 考える = logical thinking — this is the most crucial distinction
  • 覚 has two meanings: 覚える = memorize, 覚ます = wake up
  • 計る vs 測る: calculate vs measure — same pronunciation, different kanji
  • Japanese culture values process: 根回し, 空気を読む, confirmation culture all relate to "judgment"
  • Analysis/judgment kanji (判, 解, 察, 認, 確, 評) mostly use on'yomi to form formal vocabulary
